The Compass for Navigating Faith + Business

Whether you’ve been saved for most of your life, or you’re new to your walk with Christ, you’re pretty clear on how He guides you through life. Still, as a high-achieving sister in Christ with an established business or professional career, you’ve mostly been navigating the path of success through your own strength, tenacity, and perseverance. And while it seems this “compass” has served you well with the accolades to prove it, your outward success isn’t showing up as inner rest and fulfillment.

And that leaves you wondering how navigating faith + business works for next level growth?

The answer is already set within you – and that compass is the only way to navigate faith + business:  Christ!

God has set eternity in the hearts of men. Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV

So if this compass is within me, why do I find myself following the patterns of the world, like a game of Simon Says?

Did you ever play Simon Says as a kid? (not to be confused with the addictive Simon electronic game)

You know…way back when there were no real video games (maybe Pong?) and you stayed outside until the streetlights came on?

It was all about doing what Simon said and only moving when the instructions started with, “Simon says…” Being a rule follower (and competitive), I usually did pretty well at the game.

That’s probably why in my BC (before Christ) life, I followed the “rules” about pursuing success in business. Which did lead to outward success, but also left me empty and unfulfilled. I thought I’d “won” the game – moving up the ladder, adding zeros to my paycheck, being on stage and achieving promotions – but the truth is God, my husband and my family got the least of my time. So I was really not #winning.

I thought about this last week while on vacation and I was praying through Romans 12:2:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is: his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV

When we seek Him first, He will take us deeper in the Word to new levels of understanding, and here’s where Holy Spirit led me:

12:2a – To repent: There are still times that I “copy” (NLT version) or “imitate” (TPT version) the world: when I try to control everything, when I compare my progress to others, and frankly, that’s all “looking left and right” and coveting. Ouch! Thank you, Holy Spirit, for convicting me of my sin so I can repent and get better every day.

12:2b – To renew: Renewing my mind is a daily choice and practice, only done through Holy Spirit guidance, leading me to think, speak and act as Christ. It is the only way I can operate in the center of His will, and it is never one and done…it’s about progress not perfection.

12:2c – To recognize: When I follow a and b, I get to c – recognizing (over and over, with greater and deeper clarity) God’s perfect, individualized, unique and specific will for me! The only way to know His will is to know His character and that only happens by seeking Him in the Word.

You could say that Satan likes to play Simon Says with us, getting us distracted and doubtful. Romans 12:2 reminds us of all that is possible when we tune out the world, tune into God’s truth and turn up focus. And like any endeavor, it’s better to thwart Satan with people alongside you, not alone.

Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me. Let them lead me to your holy mountain, to the place where you live. Psalm 43:3-4 NLT

Jesus is the light and truth that guides you and me – He leads us to His holy places where He lives and where He invites us to co-labor with Him. He is our compass for navigating faith and business, unchanging and always pointing to true north. Join me in leaning in closer, dear high-achieving sister! Let go of your compass to “success,” and follow Him for true impact. I promise when you do, your results, impact and fulfillment will far outweigh the temporal promises of the world’s business model!
