And HE awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" and the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Mark 4:30

Redefining Hustle

Hustle [huhs-uhl]

  1. to proceed or work rapidly or energetically
  2. to push or force one’s way; jostle or shove.

Do you consider yourself ambitious?

Does the “hustle” of business get your blood pumping and synapses firing? (I am no biologist so I have no idea if that’s what happens in the brain, but you get my point, right?)

Do you feel your best being in action, yet resting is a challenge?

Yep, me too on all the above. 🙋🏼‍♀️

Here’s the thing. There is hustle involved in pursuing success God’s way. We are responsible for taking action, in obedience and on time. That’s why I call the process Hustle with Heart. But if we only define “hustle” as the overflowing calendar, celebrate it with the badge of busy-ness and let it rearrange our priorities (God, family, business), it quickly turns from holy to hurry. And that quickly burns us out.

The gospels tell us Jesus was definitely busy: days packed with teaching big and small groups, mentoring and controlling the weather (remember that storm on the Sea of Galilee?). Not to mention His role as miracle worker. It’s fair to say He embraced that first definition of hustle: working energetically and many times working rapidly. Holy hustle, if you will. But hurried? Definitely not. Jostling or shoving ahead? Nah.

He knew His priorities. And as He rebuked the wind and the sea, He does the same to us: Peace! Be still! And when we obey, and define hustle His way, great calm is possible as we hustle with heart!
