As I write this, it’s Holy Week, and by the time it’s published, we’ll be “celebrating” Good Friday and being one step closer to the true celebration: rejoicing in Jesus’ resurrection.
For some, Good Friday is a day off work or school, the start of a long weekend or the spring break trip, and surely all of those are cause for celebration.
But the true celebration is Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection for us.
Does “celebration” feel like too strong a word for such a somber day as Good Friday? Maybe.
Except that “celebration” is equated to rejoicing. And while there is much rejoicing to be done, even in our darkness, rejoicing is a decision: to believe God is real, that He is in control, and that He does work all things together for our good (even the things we don’t see as good). And we rejoice that Christ has sealed our freedom in His death and resurrection! He has overcome the world (John 16:33).
That’s all well in good for life. But what does the resurrection mean for Christians in business? How do you apply this as you walk out God’s assignment to use your gifts and talents to impact the world through a mission in the marketplace? By my understanding, it means:
We have access: When Jesus cried out, “It is finished,” the temple veil tore and gave us direct access our Creator, who knows every hair on our head, who created us on purpose for a purpose, and already knows the road He set for us. This includes that ambition that He gave you, how you’ll administer those gifts through your business, and even whom you’ll serve in your business (God has already lined up your clients!). John 19:30
We are brand new creations: We are no longer what we were before, and that means a fresh beginning with a new nature! Everything is changed when we’re born into HIS life, and our desires are conformed to His plan for us. How you view business and do business, from the mission you wrote, to the strategy and goals you set, to the outcomes you expect (and even how you measure success). All. Brand. New! 2 Corinthians 5:17
We have freedom: We have freedom from being anxious and worried because we know Jesus claimed victory in His sacrifice. That means you’re free from trying to plan every action and make sure it’s perfectly delivered. You’re free from wondering if your marketing is working or when you’ll get a new client from all the effort you put into social media. Free from wondering how it’s all going to work out and when. Do we still struggle with those things? Yes, because of our human condition. Yet we can live free knowing the Lord is always near, and He gives us unsurpassed peace. Philippians 4:5-7
Dr. Charles Stanley says: When an anxiety disappears, when we learn to take our concerns to God, he is the only one who has the power and the wisdom to deal with every issue perfectly. When we are submitted to the one who always works in our best interest, we know we have absolutely nothing to fear. (Charles Stanley Life Principles Bible, NKJV, page 1435)
That is true freedom.
We are gifted: As we mourn Jesus’ death, and rejoice for His resurrection, we also rejoice that He gives us the Holy Spirit to indwell us forever. And it is the Holy Spirit who equips us spiritual gifts. These gifts are meant for serving others and to impact the Kingdom and isn’t that emulating Jesus: using your business to serve and love others. If you don’t know your spiritual gifts, take an inventory online, and explore how they show up in the assignment God’s given for your business. I promise you’ll once again be in awe of how perfectly He puts all the puzzle pieces together! 1 Corinthians 12:1-1-11
Understanding and living in the truth of what the resurrection means for your life and business leads you to using your business to serve and love others and be bold for the Gospel.
I encourage you today to make the choice to rejoice this Good Friday because Jesus sacrifice means you can:
Rejoice in God’s sovereignty – knowing that, ultimately, He is in charge, and not surprised by anything that’s happening in our chaotic world.
Rejoice in His predestined plan – knowing that His is the best plan, already mapped out. He knows the best way for you – He created it!
Rejoice in God always – as it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16, knowing that He hears you, cares for you, protects you and blesses you. Always and in all ways.
And His resurrection is coming! Use this knowledge to step forward and shine His light through your business!
